Philo of Alexandria’s treatise On the Life of Abraham provides a number of good examples of the literary genre of the diatribe. My purpose in this paper is to study the more elaborate of these, with a view to identifying their most characteristic features and exploring how they contribute to the economy of the treatise as a whole
