    Los juicios de residencia constituyen una valiosa documentación histórica que presenta suspropias complejidades, es por ello que comprender su estructura y aplicación posibilita acercarnosa conocer más sobre estos procesos. Nuestra investigación principal sobre las formas que adquirióel gobierno del Marques de Avilés (1779-1807) a través de su juicio de residencia nos llevó aadvertir una vacancia historiografía en torno al estudio de las residencias virreinales rioplatenses.En el presente artículo, en su primer apartado nos hemos propuesto describir y explicar las etapasque componían los juicios de residencias virreinales, a través de la recopilación bibliográfica y elanálisis documental. En el segundo apartado buscamos indagar a través de fuentes editas e inéditasla aplicación de estos procesos para los virreyes rioplatenses.

    The residence trials constitute valuable historical documentation which contain certain complexities, which is why understanding their structure and application makes it possible to get to know more about these processes. Our main research on the forms that the government of the Marquis of Avilés (1779-1807) acquired through his residence trial led us to notice a historiographical vacancy surrounding the study of the River Plate viceregal residences. In the first section of this article, we set out to describe and explain the stages that made up the trials of viceregal residences, through the bibliographic compilation and the documentary analysis. In the second section of the article, we seek to investigate, through published and unpublished sources, the application of these processes for the River Plate viceroys.
