    Considered as a fundamental element in the training of artists, travelling and studying abroad was promoted by Portuguese cultural agencies through artistic scholarships. In this article, information on the official award of these scholarships is systematized for the first time. The chronology under scrutiny, between 1918 and 1939, includes important political transformations in Portugal – the end of the First Republic, the Military Dictatorship, the Estado Novo – which in turn had consequences in the organisation and action of the agencies successively responsible for the management of artistic promotion (Conselhos de Arte e Arqueologia, Junta Nacional de Educação, Instituto para a Alta Cultura). Based on the analysis of the legislative framework and on the interpretation of official resolutions, this text aims at contributing to the study of Portuguese official institutions in the promotion of artistic training and specialization abroad.

    Éléments fondamentaux pour la formation des artistes, les voyages et séjours à l’étranger ont été promus par les institutions artistiques portugaises par le biais de bourses de voyage et d’études. Dans cet article on systématise, pour la première fois, les informations sur l›attribution officielle de ces bourses, entre 1918 et 1939. Cette période comprend des transformations importantes dans la vie politico-culturelle portugaise – fin de la Première République, dictature militaire, Estado Novo –, qui à son tour ont eu des conséquences dans l’organisation et l’action des organismes successivement responsables de la gestion des subventions artistiques (Conselhos de Arte e Arqueologia, Junta Nacional de Educação, Instituto para a Alta Cultura). Fondé sur l’analyse du cadre législatif et l’interprétation des résolutions institutionnelles, ce texte vise à contribuer à la réflexion sur l’action des organismes officielles portugaises dans le domaine de la promotion de la formation et spécialisation artistique à l’étranger.

    Consideradas um elemento fundamental na formação dos artistas, as viagens e estadias no estrangeiro foram promovidas pelas instituições artísticas portuguesas através de bolsas de viagem e de estudo. Neste artigo sistematiza-se pela primeira vez a informação relativa à atribuição oficial destas bolsas, entre 1918 e 1939. Esta cronologia abarca importantes transformações na vida político-cultural do país – fim da Primeira República, Ditadura Militar, Estado Novo –, que por sua vez tiveram consequências no enquadramento e ação dos organismos sucessivamente responsáveis pela gestão dos subsídios artísticos (Conselhos de Arte e Arqueologia, Junta de Educação Nacional, Instituto para a Alta Cultura). Fundamentando-se na análise do enquadramento legislativo e interpretação das resoluções dos organismos decisores, e referenciando alguns casos concretos da sua aplicação, este texto visa contribuir para a reflexão sobre a ação das instituições oficiais portuguesas no fomento da formação e especialização artística no estrangeiro.
