This article aims to describe the uses of formulae in the French letters by two groups of Protestants refugees who have settled in England since the seventeenth century in order to escape from the persecution against them in France. Our corpus is made up of letters from two different collections in the Huguenot Library of the Huguenot Society of Great Britain and Ireland. The first one is Huguenot Library F/AF, which was transcribed and published by W. Turner in 1940. The second one is Huguenot Library F/CA, which has not been transcribed nor edited yet. Through the observation of the formulae in the introduction and the ending of the letters and the comparison with the findings of previous studies, this paper identified some features which distinguish certain social profiles from the others, and also the characteristics of the language of the refugees. This study serves as a basis for retracing the social networks of the writers through the exploration of epistolary formulae and a better understanding of the process of their linguistic acculturation.
