The aerodynamic modelling of the blades is a crucial step in the design and modelling of wind turbines (WTs). This study presents the design of a small horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) using a mathematical model based on Blade Element Momentum (BEM) approach. The proposed methodology exploits MATLAB, Qblade and XFOIL softwares. This study was applied to a 10 KW horizontal axis WT with S809 airfoil. The results of the analysis show a maximum power coefficient of 0.46 and a maximum torque of 64 Nm. This procedure could be effectively used to design and analyze the HAWT operation.
