    Engineering in the nineteenth century acquired notoriety through the need to carry out works of improvement in the country that were relevant to the construction of a modern nation. The text presents how the formation and regulation of the profession of engineer to attend the needs of the time, from the creation of the Classes of Fortifications, still in century XVII, until the creation of the Engineering course in the Polytechnic School of Rio de Janeiro. It also shows how, after graduating, the engineer was entering the professional activities.

    A engenharia no século XIX adquiriu notoriedade através da necessidade de realização de obras de melhorias no País que se mostravam relevantes para a construção de uma nação moderna. O texto apresenta como se deu a formação e regulamentação da profissão de engenheiro para atender as necessidades da época, desde a criação das Aulas de Fortificações, ainda no século XVII, até a criação do curso de Engenharia na Escola Politécnica do Rio de Janeiro. Também apresenta como, após formado, o engenheiro ingressava nas atividades profissionais.
