Uso de catéteres de línea media en las unidades de cuidados intensivos neonatales

    En la actualidad, existe una creciente necesidad de buscar alternativas en el campo de la terapia intravenosa que permitan satisfacer las necesidades de los pacientes neonatales, así como de reducir las complicaciones generadas por el uso de catéteres venosos. El catéter de línea media podría representar una buena alternativa a los catéteres cortos periféricos, ya que es un catéter seguro y eficiente para la administración de tratamientos intravenosos, aunque tiene ciertas limitaciones como el uso de sustancias vesicantes e irritantes1, que son necesarias conocer. El objetivo de este artículo es conocer con más detalle las características de este tipo de catéter, sus ventajas e inconvenientes, así como su cuidado y mantenimiento, tarea que recae en los profesionales de enfermería y que es de vital importancia para asegurar la longevidad y el buen funcionamiento de estos catéteres.

    Currently, there is an increasing need to find alternatives in the field of intravenous therapy that allow meeting the needs of neonatal patients while reducing the complications generated by the use of venous catheters. Midline catheter has become a good alternative to short peripheral catheters, since it is a safe and efficient catheter for the administration of intravenous treatments, although it has certain limitations such as the use of blistering and irritating substances1, which are necessary to know. The objective of this article is to know in more detail the characteristics of this type of catheter, its pros and cons, as well as its care and maintenance of the device, a task that falls to nursing professionals and that is of vital importance to ensure the longevity and proper functioning of these catheters.
