De Barbaria al mar Negre. Expansió i crisi del comerç de blat del port de Maó (1720-1830)

    The purpose of this article is to analyse the expansion and decline of the cereal trade from the port of Ma-hon during the 18th century and the first decades of the 19th. We will focus on the factors that drive this activity in the framework of the free port imple-mented under the British rule, the organization and the financing of the commercial expeditions. The expansion will continue under Spanish sovereignty, though no longer as free port, when the cereal trade reaches its maximum activity. After 1820 the wheat trade will rapidly decline, causing the activity of Mahon’s port to sink and giving rise to a deep economic depression.

    El propòsit d’aquest article és analitzar l’expansió i declivi del comerç de cereals des del port de Maó durant el segle xviii i primeres dècades del xix. Ens centrarem en els factors que impul-sen aquesta activitat en el marc del port franc implantat sota el domini britànic, l’organització i finançament de les expedicions comercials. Tanmateix, l’expansió continuarà sota sobirania espanyola, ja sense el port franc, quan el comerç de cereals assoleix la màxima activitat. Serà a partir de 1820 quan el comerç de blat entrarà en un ràpid declivi que enfonsarà l’activitat del port de Maó i donarà lloc a una profunda depressió econòmica.
