In this paper it is argued that abductive reasoning is part of a cognitive process that involves interpreting something as being something. In order to do so, a definition of proposition and interpretation as type of cognitive events is proposed. Taking this into account, it is established that the inferential pattern corresponding to this type of cognitive event is abductive as, in some cases, the activity of interpreting is a process of searching for plausible assumptions to form consistent explanatory hypotheses.
