In this work we present the two interpretations of the explanatory role of the concept of genetic information, namely coding relation and teleosemantics, and the explananda to which they contribute. By focusing on an organizational theory of biological functions (Schlosser 1997), we suggest a possible role of the concept of genetic information in the explanation of a third explanandum: the continuous self-re-production of an organism by means of which the organism achieves its self-maintanance through time.
