  • I describe some of the biases of classical accounts of measurement in psychology, that help to understand the widespread treatment of the problems in this context. Towards this end, I present the crucial distinction between representationalism and operationalism, and some subsidiary distinctions like the one between metric and non-metric or quantitative and qualitative, and between measurement theory and metrization theory. I then show some alternative ways to work on the problem of measurement in psychology, beyond classical accounts. Finally I develop some related key issues and the constraints that the previously drawn distinctions provide for their treatment. I outline some relevant questions for further research, such as the issue of accuracy in the study of qualitative aspects of psychological phenomenon and the relevance of features inherent to mathematical modeling and their role in measurement.
