Damos a conocer en este artículo algunos retazos de la vida de este insigne personaje, nacido en el seno de una familia de la alta alcurnia española del siglo XVI, que desde los inicios de su juventud mostró señales claras de servicio a su Rey, y a los 22 años fue nombrado gobernador y capitán general de Chile (1556-1561), con la misión de pacificar el territorio y dar asiento a los araucanos, y en su empeño realizó una expedición triunfal al archipiélago de Chiloé. Pero su vida no terminó ahí, pues en febrero del 1560 fue nombrado gobernador de los Moxos, extensa región de Bolivia Oriental por conquistar, cargo que no pudo ocupar y en su nombre lo desempeñó honrosamente Ñuflo de Chaves, su teniente de gobernador. Del 1590 al 1596 fue el VIII virrey del Perú.

We present in this article some snippets of the life of this distinguished character, born into a family of high Spanish lineage of the XVI century, who from the beginning of his youth showed clear signs of service to his King, and to the At the age of 22 he was appointed Governor and Captain General of Chile (1556-1561), with the mission of pacifying the territory and giving a seat to the Araucanians, and in his efforts he made a triumphant expedition to the Chiloé archipelago. But his life did not end there, because in February 1560 he was appointed governor of Los Moxos, a vast region of Eastern Bolivia to be conquered, a position he could not occupy and in his name Ñuflo de Chaves, his lieutenant governor, held it honorably. From 1590 to 1596 he was the VIII Viceroy of Peru.
