  • In it, I offer a reading in which El retablo de las maravillas combines the literary topos of the charlatan scam with Giambattista Della Porta's innovation of projected performance using an optical camera obscura. According to The Art of the Puppet. nomads have animals and, therefore, leather. The physical phenomenon of the shadow, a darkened form on a surface created by the blocking of light from its source, is easily explained and observable by the naked eye. According to Christopher James, this phenomenon was leveraged by desert travelers who primarily traveled by night and rested during the day.
