    Following up the history of the notion and the term population, as related from a demographic point of view by H. Le Bras in his 2000 book, The Invention of populations, this article considers in the light of linguistics the relationship between population, peuple and dépopulation in French. It shows the influence exerted by the lexicon upon the creation and the evolution of certain socio-ideological concepts.

    Prenant le relais de l’histoire du concept et du terme de population, retracée du point de vue démographique par H. Le Bras dans L’invention des populations (2000), cet article considère sous un éclairage linguistique la question des rapports entre notamment population, peuple et dépopulation. Il montre le rôle que peut jouer le lexique dans la constitution et l’évolution de certains concepts socio-idéologiques.
