    This article aims to make a brief mapping of the development of the concepts of Postmodernity and Postmodernism, with emphasis on the contributions of Jean-François Lyotard. In parallel, the changes in American artistic production from the second half of the 20th century will be pointed out to exemplify how such changes were fundamental for the development of the idea of Postmodernism in contemporary and how these ideas were used in the characterization of the kind of Painting developed during the 1980s, named as Transavantgarde, theorized by the Italian critic Achille Bonito Oliva.

    Este artigo tem como objetivo realizar um breve mapeamento do desenvolvimento dos conceitos de Pós-Modernidade e Pós-Modernismo, dando ênfase às contribuições do Jean-François Lyotard. Paralelamente serão apontadas as alterações na produção artística norte-americana, desde a segunda metade do século XX, com o objetivo de demonstrar como tais alterações foram fundamentais para o desenvolvimento da ideia de Pós-Modernismo na arte contemporânea e de como estas ideias foram utilizadas na caracterização da vertente de pintura desenvolvida durante a década de 1980, chamada Transvanguarda, teorizada pelo crítico italiano Achille Bonito Oliva.
