  • Resumen
    • This paper is a prosopographical study of three high-ranking officials of the 6th century Sasanian empire. Through an analysis of previously scattered evidence, I corroborate the hypothesis that these three officials are homonymous and, in fact, one and the same. In the first part, I analyse the epigraphic data pertaining to Wahrām ī Nām-xwāst-Husraw Ādurmāhān, a “general of the southern quarter of Iran” (MP ērān kust ī nēmrōz spāhbed) known from stamped clay sealings. By combining onomastic analysis and literary evidence, I cast some light on the meaning of his names and honorific titles. In the second part, I discuss the Greek and Syriac documentation referring to the Persian general Adaarmanēs/Adarmahan, and revisit the chronology and the implications of his military activity during the Persian-Byzantine war of 572-591 CE. In the third part, I study Ferdowsi and Ṯa‘ālibī’s narrative of the death of the vizir Bahrām-e Āḏarmāhān in the context of the “purges” allegedly launched by king Ohrmezd IV. Particular emphasis is given on the importance of prosopography for sifting out data from the “black legend” affecting this sovereign. Finally, I discuss the arguments for the identification of these three individuals.
