    Indigenous peoples have been of unparalleled importance to the consolidation of the Portuguese colonizing project in the region of the Rio Branco valley, currently the state of Roraima. Notwithstanding, how were they represented in the Portuguese documentation of the eighteenth century, when the Luso-Brazilian presence and the colonizing project in the region were intensified? Using extensive documentation, I present the contradictions of such representation, such as the contradiction among the many epithets to which they were assigned without, however, perceiving contradiction in the implemented project per se, that of transforming these indigenous people into Portuguese subjects in order to warrant the possession of their lands. The construction of a representation took place in this context of disputes and left traces that can still be perceived, especially in spaces where the indigenous presence is remarkable

    Os povos indígenas tiveram uma importância ímpar na consolidação do projeto colonizador português na região do vale do rio Branco, atual estado de Roraima. Não obstante, como foram representados na documentação portuguesa do século XVIII, momento em que se intensificou a presença luso-brasileira e o projeto colonizador na região? Valendo-me de uma ampla documentação apresento alguns pontos que podem ser percebidos como contradições a essa representação, como os inúmeros epítetos a que foram designados sem, contudo, perceber contradição no projeto implementado, esse sim incontestável: o de transformar esses indígenas em súditos portugueses para garantir a posse de suas terras. A construção de uma representação se deu nesse contexto de disputas e deixou resquícios que ainda podem ser percebidos nesse espaço.
