Pontes orientalistas sobre o Atlântico: indícios de diálogos entre o orientalismo luso e o brasileiro no século XIX

    In order to contribute to a reflection on the still little studied Orientalism in Brazil in the 19th century, and based on the indication of an identifiable relationship between indigenism and Orientalism, this article turns to an initial survey of the relationship between the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute (Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro), namely in its publication Revista do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro, the figure of Emperor D. Pedro II – a great supporter of this Institute – and some of the Portuguese orientalists of the 1800s. Given the preliminary nature of the present investigation, we mapped the presence of Portuguese Orientalists within the aforementioned Brazilian Institute, an indication of the circulation of such conceptions between the two sides of the Atlantic. Here, we will also discuss the various forms taken by the concept of Orientalism, since, since the publication of the 1978 book by Edward Said, the concept has unfolded and “adjusted” to a series of different realities, which deepen and make it more complex as they go along in which they make it more operable

    Com o intuito de contribuir para uma reflexão acerca do ainda pouco estudado orientalismo no Brasil do século XIX, e tendo como base a indicação de uma identificável relação entre o indigenismo e o orientalismo, o presente artigo se volta para um levantamento inicial da relação entre o Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro, nomeadamente em sua publicação Revista do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro, a figura do imperador D. Pedro II – grande incentivador deste Instituto –, e alguns dos orientalistas portugueses dos oitocentos. Dado o caráter preliminar da presente investigação, mapeamos a presença de orientalistas portugueses no interior do citado Instituto brasileiro, indício de circulação de tais concepções entre as duas margens do Atlântico. Aqui, discutiremos, ainda, as variadas formas assumidas pelo conceito orientalismo, posto que, desde a publicação do livro de 1978, por Edward Said, o conceito se desdobrou e “ajustou-se” a uma série de realidades diversas, que o aprofundam e complexificam na medida em que o tornam mais operacionalizável.
