    Le concept de valimento a fait l’objet d’un regain d’intérêt dans l’historiographie au cours de ces vingt dernières années. Les historiens des monarchies européennes du XVIIème siècle ont contribué à cette revalorisation avec la révision du rôle du favori dans le gouvernement et l’étude de la privança comme un phénomène européen. Malgré la consolidation de cette nouvelle perspective, les études sur le valimento au Portugal sont encore insuffisantes. Cet article aborde la question du valimento dans la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle au Portugal à partir de l’exemple de l’historiographie sur le 3ème comte de Castelo Melhor.

    Nos últimos vinte anos, os historiadores das monarquias europeias do século XVII têm demonstrado um interesse renovado pela questão do valimento. Esta revalorização é o resultado da assimilação de uma nova visão sobre o papel dos favoritos no governo e da consideração da privança como um fenómeno europeu. Apesar da consolidação desta perspectiva, ainda são escassos os estudos sobre o valimento em Portugal. Tomando como exemplo a historiografia sobre o III conde de Castelo Melhor, este artigo estuda a questão da privança no Portugal da segunda metade do século XVII.

    In the last twenty years, historians of the European monarchies of 17th century have demonstrated a new interest for the question of the favouritism (valimento). This fresh understanding is the result of the assimilation of a new vision regarding the role of the royal favourites in the government and the study of favouritism as a European phenomenon. Despite the consolidation of this historiographical perspective, studies about the favouritism in Portugal are still scarce. Taking the example of the historiography on the 3rd count of Castelo Melhor, this article approaches the question of favouritism in Portugal in the second half of 17 th century.
