This study focuses on generic sentences with an adverbial quantifier and a singular indefinite in subject and object position. The analysis concentrates on the indefinite object NP. At the level of information packaging our analysis accounts for basic categoric sentences in which the VP corresponds to a broad focus and the topic is the subject NP. The aim of the analysis is to define what restrictions are imposed by this basic configuration on the indefinite object NP. The proposal is to distinguish between those cases in which the indefinite object NP is followed by a (nominal or adverbial) modifier or by a prepositional phrase and those cases in which the indefinite noun occupies the final position. The hypothesis defended is that indefinite nouns in final position are licensed by stative predicates (i-level predicates). We propose for these predicates a model of quantification over situations which crucially differs from traditional analysis in terms of nominal quantification.

Cette étude examine les phrases génériques avec un adverbe quantificationnel et un indéfini singulier en position de sujet et d'objet. C'est l'indéfini objet qui est au centre de la discussion. Sur le plan de la structuration de l'information, l'analyse porte essentiellement sur la structure catégorique de base, dans laquelle le syntagme verbal correspond à un focus large et le topique correspond au sujet indéfini. L'objectif de l'étude est de définir les restrictions que cette configuration de base impose sur le SN indéfini en position d'objet. Nous proposons de distinguer entre le cas où le nom objet est suivi d'un modifieur, nominal ou verbal, ou d'un syntagme prépositionnel et le cas où le nom indéfini se trouve en position finale. Pour ce dernier cas, nous soutenons que les indéfinis en position finale sont autorisés par des prédicats statiques (prédicats i-level). L'étude propose pour ces prédicats un modèle de quantification sur les situations qui se distingue de l'analyse traditionnelle en termes de quantification nominale.
