In the first half of the nineteenth century, the island of Madeira has become a center for Portuguese and foreigners tuberculosis patients who were seeking treatment in its mild and invigorating climate. This article wants to analyze the natural conditions and policies that allowed Madeira to become a climotherapy resort and explain the birth, development and management of the first Portuguese hospital for treatment of tuberculosis created in Funchal, between 1853 and 1858.

Dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle, l’île de Madère est devenue, en raison de son climat doux et tonique, un centre de traitement recherché pour les patients tuberculeux portugais et étrangers. Cet article vise à analyser les conditions naturelles et politiques qui ont permis à Madère de devenir une station de climatothérapie. Il explique aussi la naissance, le développement et la gestion du premier hôpital portugais pour le traitement de la tuberculose, créé à Funchal entre 1853 et 1858.

Na primeira metade do século XIX, pelo seu clima ameno e tonificante, a ilha da Madeira tornou-se um centro terapêutico procurado por doentes tuberculosos portugueses e estrangeiros. Este artigo pretende analisar as condições naturais e políticas que permitiram à Madeira tornar-se uma estância climatoterápica e explicar o nascimento, desenvolvimento e gestão do primeiro hospital português para tratamento de tuberculosos, criado no Funchal, entre 1853 e 1858.
