La cova de Sant Ferran (Sant Ferran de ses Roques, Formentera) i la història de les recerques subterrànies a l’illa

    The Cova de Sant Ferran has been discovered in 2022 during the construction works of two residential buildings in the limits of the homonymous village. As a result of a speleological report commissioned by de Formentera Island Council, it has been considered relevant to publish some informations about this cave. The whole cavity has about 74 m from end to end, and can be divided in three zones. An ancient collapse depression, in the middle, allows access to some underground areas distributed in two well differentiated sectors. Mainly inside the most interesting North sector, as a consequence of previous archaeological activities were located skulls and other human bones, together with prehistoric pottery remains. At the same time, in this paper we present a brief historical review of the explorations and speleological studies carried out on Formentera, as well as some considerations on the cave types existing on the island.

    La cova de Sant Ferran s’ha localitzat l’any 2022 arran de les obres de construcció d’uns blocs d’habitatges als límits del poble homònim. Fruit de l’informe encomanat pel Consell Insular de Formentera s’ha considerat interessant donar a conèixer la cavitat. El conjunt, d’uns 74 m lineals d’un extrem a l’altre, es pot considerar dividit en tres zones. Un antic esfondrament central permet accedir a les zones subterrànies, disposades en dos sectors diferenciats. Al sector Nord, el més interessant, es van localitzar, per part d’una actuació arqueològica prèvia, cranis i altres ossos humans i ceràmica prehistòrica. Així mateix, es fa una breu revisió històrica de les exploracions i estudis espeleològics efectuats a l’illa i dels tipus de cavitats presents.
