  The campaign of 1810-1811 is revisited and the paradoxical confluence of the objectives of both parties considered as an explanation of its characteristics. The army leaded by Masséna invaded Portugal following instructions that were opposed to the Napoleonic combat, including the siege of fortified towns and a slow evolution inside the enemy’s territory. Wellington surprised the French with the lines of Torres Vedras, a system of campaign fortifications, having the main function of protecting a British reembarkment of his troops. Wellington’s tactics included the destruction of all recourses that could maintain the French, creating an open conflict between the British commander and some members of the council of governors of Portugal.

  On reprend ici l’analyse de la campagne militaire de 1810-1811 au Portugal, en émettant l’hypothèse d’une convergence paradoxale d’objectifs entre les antagonistes. L’armée de Masséna pénétra au Portugal en suivant des instructions contraires aux caractéristiques du combat napoléonien, menant des sièges et progressant lentement. Wellington parvint à surprendre les français avec les lignes de Torres Vedras, un système de fortification de campagne qui avait comme principale fonction la protection du repli des troupes britanniques. La tactique adoptée par Wellington, conditionnée par les ordres du gouvernement de Londres, supposait la destruction des ressources qui pouvaient alimenter les français. Le commandant britannique fit alors face à un conflit ouvert avec certains gouverneurs du royaume.

  O artigo retoma a análise da campanha francesa de 1810-1811 em Portugal, considerando como explicação uma confluência paradoxal de objectivos dos antagonistas. O exército dirigido por Masséna invadiu Portugal seguindo instruções que contrariavam as características do combate napoleónico, cercando praças e progredindo lentamente. Wellington surpreendeu os franceses com as linhas de Torres Vedras, sistema de fortificações de campanha, cuja primeira motivação era a protecção da retirada das tropas britânicas. A táctica adoptada por Wellington, condicionada pelas ordens do governo de Londres, passou pela destruição dos recursos que poderiam sustentar os franceses, levando a um conflito aberto com alguns dos governadores do reino.
