    El presente artículo defiende la tesis de que el importante cambio que se observa en la narrativa española con la aparición de obras radicalmente distintas en 1902 ya tenía claros antecedentes en la década anterior. El cambio de rumbo no sólo habría que retrotraerlo a los años 90 del siglo XIX sino que así lo indican los comentarios de escritores de la generación realista, notablemente Galdós, y los de escritores más jóvenes, como Unamuno y Baroja. Tanto en España como en Europa se critica implacablemente la teoría científico-naturalista, mientras que simultáneamente se adapta sutilmente la praxis realista para realzar el papel de la imaginación y rebajar el de la representación de realidades externas.

    The present article defends the view that the change of direction of Spanish fictional narrative associated with the appearance of radically different novels in 1902 needs to be put back to the preceding decade. This change of direction in the 1890s is indicated by the critical observations of older writers, notably Galdós, and younger ones, such as Unamuno and Baroja. The scientific pretensions of Naturalism were severely criticised both in Spain and Europe, while simultaneously Realist praxis was undergoing a subtle change which highlighted the role of the imagination and played down the representation of the external world.
