Algunas consideraciones sobre la licitud y la necesidad de la milicia en el Quijote

    Don Quijote parece debatirse entre la caballería y la milicia, especialmente en la Segunda parte, tras el episodio del descenso a la cueva de Montesinos (II, 23) y el encuentro con el soldado (II, 24). Los cuatro motivos por los que se deben tomar las armas (II, 27) parecen ser un reflejo, ampliado, de una parte de la doctrina de Maquiavelo, difundida entre otros por Diego de Salazar, que puso la disciplina como condición necesaria para los soldados, «nervios» de la guerra del organicismo que también defendió Erasmo y fundamento de la «nobleza civil» de Urrea y otros tratadistas que posiblemente leyó Cervantes. Los gobiernos espiritual, temporal y militar responden a un ordo que permite compatibilizar el individualismo caballeresco de un hidalgo pobre como don Quijote y la milicia, con cuyos representantes se solidariza el protagonista.

    Don Quijote would seem to be torn between the chivalry and the military, especially in the Second Part, following the episode of the descent into the cave of Montesinos (II, 23) and the meeting with the soldier (II, 24). The four reasons for taking up arms (II, 27) appear to be an extended reflection of part of Machiavelli’s doctrine spread by (among others) Diego de Salazar, who established discipline as the fundamental condition for soldiers, «the energy» of the war of organicism that Erasmus also defended, and the basis for the «civil nobility» of Urrea and other writers who may have read Cervantes. Spiritual, temporal and military governments respond to an ordo that facilitates the compatibility of the chivalrous individualism of a poor nobleman such as don Quijote with the military, with whose representatives the protagonist sympathises.
