    Este artículo informa de la población española alrededor de 1600 y su distribución, en específico, en Castilla-La Mancha, lugar de origen de don Quijote. Los núcleos poblacionales eran reducidos y se distinguía bien la ciudad de la villa y del lugar o aldea. No obstante, Cervantes utiliza estos vocablos de manera indistinta en su novela, a pesar de que las ciudades como tales eran escasas, en especial en la ya España vaciada interior de aquella época. El artículo se propone intentar discernir en qué lugar de la Mancha vivía don Quijote, teniendo en cuenta qué significaban “villa”, “lugar” y “ciudad” respectivamente en el siglo XVI y en siglos anteriores.

    This article reports on the Spanish population around 1600 and its distribution, specifically, in Castilla-La Mancha, the place of origin of Don Quixote. The population centers were small and the city was well distinguished from the town and from the place or village. However, Cervantes uses these words interchangeably in his novel, despite the fact that cities as such were scarce, especially in the already emptied interior of Spain at that time. The article intends to try to discern where Don Quixote lived in La Mancha, taking into account what "villa", "place" and "city" meant, respectively, in the 16th century and in previous centuries.
