Since the moment in wich Bernardo Secchi advancesin Casabella in 1984, conditions have not changed verymuch. The American way of life built the outskirts of cities leaving that marginal classes deteriorate the towncenter. Aspirations of the middle class were emptying the city and damaging its architectural and socialstructures, and causing dispersion. This is the cause ofthe fragmented city that we live in nowdays.Another economical crisis, this time globally, like theearly 70’s left much of the industrial scheme of obsolete cities, appears again as a fundamental guideline ofthe turn of the new century. In this case, the disasteralso has an economical and social consequence, but onthe contrary, today it has not only made crack the oasisof black gold but the financial and housing market aresources of disaster. The rising price of fuel makes notpossible a dispersed city where the car is essential and alarge number of obsolete structures generated after thehousing boom, next to the abandoned industrial heritage, allow the city to take back to the town center. Tothis end, the structures of industrial buildings will haveto adapt in order to take on new roles in contemporarysociety. The multiplicity of uses and culture of the imagewill help to convert gas pipeline to homes, bunkers tooffices and coal mines to museums of contemporary art, showing that the city and the territory where we willlive next years is already built.
