    El siguiente ensayo hace parte de las reflexiones surgidas durante el proyecto Modelo de Gestión UrbanaSostenible realizado entre junio de 2008 y diciembrede 2010 por nueve grupos de investigación de la Universidad del Norte en Barranquilla, Colombia y financiado por COLCIENCIAS1, haciendo aquí énfasis enel aspecto de la habitabilidad en tanto que elementoaglutinante de la sostenibilidad urbana y pilar para unnuevo urbanismo.El proyecto Modelos de Gestión Urbana Sostenible(MGUS) se entiende como una herramienta que ayudaa realizar estudios prospectivos sobre la habitabilidadde Barranquilla, en el marco de un desarrollo sostenible. Es un modelo de análisis para la gestión urbana sostenible, medida con base en indicadores de calidad devida y desarrollo humano permitiendo la integraciónde factores del conocimiento, tecnología y la innovación a nivel regional, nacional e internacional. Estemodelo se validó para Barranquilla, (con 1.600.000habitantes la quinta ciudad más grande de Colombia)basados en la información bibliográfica disponible, en larecolección directa de datos y en la realización de proyecciones por medio de simulaciones de casos.

    The proportion of urban population increases dayby day worldwide and increases likewise the possibility of environment deterioration. The Cities lacksthe tools to manage these growths or the argumentsto stop or reorient settlements. All this generatesa diminished authority lacking the strength to enforce the Territorial Ordinance and a vicious cycle is conformed to a corresponding decrease in thequality of life of the population and a negative message for the opening of development opportunities. This research results from the above mentioned situation and it aims at designing tools which take intoaccount the variables susceptible to be intervened toattain benefits for the population, which have an incidence in sustainable urban development and thatcould anticipate the effects of any measure. They willalso assure the quantification of not only the economical resources in order to implement them, but alsotheir availability for public examination and additionally that the intervention measures are efficient.The present essay is part of the reflections arisen during the project Sustainable Urban Management Model (MGUS), performed between June of 2008 andDecember of 2010 by research groups of UniversidadDel Norte in Barranquilla, Colombia, placing emphasis on the habitability aspect as an agglutination element in urban sustainability and foundation for a newurbanism.The model of the MGUS project has been validated forBarranquilla (the fifth largest city in Colombia), basedon the available bibliography, the direct data collectionand the implementation of projections through casessimulations.
