La universidad como elemento rehabilitador de la convivencia ciudadana: el caso de la facultad de biblioteconomía y documentación de la Universidad de Extremadura

    En 1990 se toma la difícil decisión de rehabilitar y acondicionar el Casco Histórico de Badajoz. Una zonaperimetral en torno a la Plaza Alta y la Alcazaba árabecon serios problemas de convivencia, de adaptaciónciudadana, de desestructuración familiar y social, visiblemente degradada, y por donde pasear se convertíapoco menos que en una aventura de dudoso desenlace.Entre las medidas adoptadas, se decide el traslado deun buen número de jóvenes universitarios al CascoAntiguo, justo en el centro de la zona conflictiva. Lacreación de un centro universitario que obligue a laconvivencia diaria y a la “reconquista” del territoriomás antiguo e interesante de la ciudad.En 2001 la Facultad de Biblioteconomía y Documentación se traslada al antiguo Hospital Militar, rehabilitado al efecto. Esta actuación ha conseguido exactamente el efecto deseado y hoy, la Alcazaba de Badajozes un recinto de convivencia, de comunicación y deocio para niños y adultos.

    In 1990 it was taken the difficult decision of restoringand arranging the old quarter of Badajoz. A perimeterarea around the “Plaza Alta” and the “Alcazaba” (theArab castle) with serious coexistence´s problems, ofcivic adaptation, family and social dysfunctional, visibly degraded, where to go for a walk became almostan unpredictable adventure.Among the adopted measures it was decided the transfer of a considerable amount of university studentsto the old part of the city, just in the middle of thetroubled area. The creation of an university centre thatforce to daily coexistence and to the “reconquest” ofthe oldest and most interesting place of the city. In 2001 the faculty of Librarianship and Documentation was moved to the old military hospital, rehabilitated to this end. This action has achieved exactly theexpected effect and nowadays the “Alcazaba” of Badajoz is an area of coexistence, communication and leisure for children and adults.
