    As shown by the existing literature, the French neutral demonstrative pronoun ça still represents a debatable issue. Apart from the link between ça and cela, which leads to much debate about the relationship between spoken and written language, ça is problematic regarding its indexical mode of reference. As a matter of fact, ça is not always purely anaphoric, and the discourse entity to which it refers back undergoes some neutralization, whether it is categorial or referential.

    The present study deals with the indexical mode of reference of ça in a subject position, and is based on spoken French data. The hypothesis defended here is that this mode of reference can be placed on a continuum, following the anaphoric and/or deictic procedure at stake as well as the extent to which context is involved in the identification of the intended referent.

    Comme le prouve l’abondante littérature existante, le pronom démonstratif neutre ça est sujet à controverse. Outre le rapport qu’il entretient avec cela, qui ouvre la porte à bien des débats sur le lien entre oral et écrit, se pose le problème de son fonctionnement indexical. En effet, ça n’est pas toujours employé comme anaphorique, et la reprise qu’il effectue s’accompagne d’un phénomène de neutralisation, catégorielle ou référentielle.

    A partir d’exemples issus de conversations spontanées, cette étude s’attache à décrire le fonctionnement de ça en position sujet. L’hypothèse avancée ici est qu’il existe un continuum référentiel de ça, en fonction des procédures indexicales que sont l’anaphore et la deixis, et de la prise en compte du contexte dans la désignation du référent visé.
