The debate about risk and safety of train passengers reappeard in Argentina after 2011 as a consequence of the major accidents that occurred since then. These accidents revealed both the deteriorated condition of roads and tractive equipment, and failures in management and operation of the lines. The findings show some paradoxes related to the vulnerability and reliability of the Argentine railway system. A qualitative methodology was applied based on a case study of the metropolitan Line Belgrano Sur. The representations of railway workers about risk show great contrast with public opinion. The mainstream literature in accident analysis identifies the human factor as the most important one as regards vulnerability in organizations. Paradoxically, the human factor is a source of vulnerability but also of reliability.
