AbstractThis paper aims to check the hypotheses regarding the anti cyclical role of cooperatives and their best performance in crises, using the available information about companies and registered employment of the social security system (Sistema Integrado Previsional Argentino-SIPA). We will analyze employment dynamics and business demography of the cooperative sector for 1996 to 2012. Also, this paper seeks to update the results of previous studies concerning the structure of economic activity of Argentine cooperatives using the available information. International evidence shows that the formation of cooperatives is an effective solution for unemployment during capitalist-crises and that such production units have a high survival rate.
