Permanencia y titulación de las carreras universitarias en Chile

    En este artículo se reportan las tasas de permanencia y titulación en Chile de las carreras universitarias de pregrado de cinco años de duración formal, abarcando el desempeño de cohortes de estudiantes con ingreso entre los años 2009 y 2017 a nivel nacional. Estas cifras fueron calculadas utilizando la información disponible en el portal de datos abiertos del Ministerio de Educación con metodología cuantitativa y el análisis empleado es descriptivo-correlacional. Los hallazgos obtenidos permiten señalar que tres de cada cinco estudiantes perduran en la misma carrera y casa de estudios transcurridos 4 años desde el ingreso a la misma, 16% logra titularse tras 5 años y un 46% lo hace a lo largo del periodo que abarca hasta tres años adicionales a la duración formal. La retención de segundo año y la acreditación institucional exhiben relación con las tasas de titulación transcurridos 8 años, no así con la titulación al quinto año de antigüedad. Se concluye poniendo de relevancia la necesidad de profundizar el debate público sobre el concepto de eficacia terminal pretendido para el sistema nacional de educación terciaria, así como la importancia de incorporar este tipo de información al conjunto de indicadores periódicamente reportados por los organismos oficiales.

    This article reports on the retention of students and their completion rates in Chile´s five years undergraduate university programmes, covering the performance of cohorts entered between the years 2009 and 2017 at the national level. These figures were computed employing data available in the Open Data website of the Ministry of Education. The findings show that three out of five students remain in the university and the same tertiary program after 4 years from when they entered it; 16% completed their formation after 5 years; and 46% do so over a period that covers up to three additional years. At the institutional level, second-year retention and institutional accreditation show a correlation with the completion rates after 8 years, but do not show the same with the fifth-year ones. It concludes by highlighting the need of deepen the public debate over the competition effectiveness concept intended for the national tertiary education system, as well as, the relevance of incorporating this type of information into the set of indicators periodically reported by official bodies.
