An optimal state of the intestinal epithelium is essential for good health. It must allow the absorption of essential fluids and nutrients into the blood, but at the same time it must act as a barrier to allergens, pathogens and toxins. When the intestinal barrier is altered for different reasons, there is an increase in intestinal permeability. This state can lead to multiple pathologies that alter the quality of life. Zonulin is an endogenous protein that acts as a «key» in opening and closing the junctions between the cells of the intestinal epithelium. Its measurement will be decisive to assess the different degrees of permeability and, therefore, as a tool in the treatment and improvement of the health of patients.
