    Asp, a la comarca del Vinalopó Mitjà, té una història lingüística especial. Fins a l’any 1609 Asp fou una població de moriscos arabòfons. Asp pertanyia al senyoriu del duc de Maqueda i marqués d’Elx, com la veïna el Fondó de les Neus, que s’ha mantingut catalanoparlant fins hui. Asp fou repoblada en 1611 amb repobladors vinguts preferentment de les localitats properes, catalanòfons, encara que posteriorment l’arribada de persones de fora del Regne de València (el senyor d’Asp era castellà i residia a Castella) determinaria la substitució lingüística, plenament certificada en 1797, quan el geògraf Antoni Josep Cavanilles escriu que a Asp parlen un mal castellà, com a Montfort i Elda. Quan i com es produí el canvi de llengua a Asp, del català al castellà, és l’objecte d’aquesta recerca.

    Asp (Aspe in Spanish), in the region of El Vinalopó Mitjà, has a special linguistic history. Until 1609 Asp was a village of Arabic-speaking Moriscos. Asp belonged to the lordship of the Duke of Maqueda and Marquis of Elx, like the neighbouring El Fondó de les Neus, which has remained Catalan-speaking to this day. Asp was repopulated in 1611 with settlers coming mainly from Catalan-speaking nearby towns, although the later arrival of people from outside the Kingdom of València (the Lord of Asp was Castilian and lived in Castile) would determine the language shift, fully certified in 1797, when geographer Antoni Josep Cavanilles wrote that “people in Asp speak a badly spoken Castilian (Spanish), as in Montfort and Elda”. When and how the language shift, from Catalan to Spanish, took place in Asp is the subject of this research
