    Juan Vilanova y Piera was one of the most important naturalists in the whole European scientific scene during the second half of the 19th century. His contributions did not only concern the Valencian area, in fact, at the end of the 19th century, they ended up being the foundation of subjects such as Ge-ology, Palaeontology and Prehistory in Spain. In order to celebrate the recent bicentenary of his birth, a brief review of his trip through the regions located in the South of Alacant has been organised based on the references found in his articles and in the press of that time. His studies show a deep knowledge, not only concerning the regions located in the North of Alacant, València and Castelló, but also the lands situated around the river Vinalopó and the lower course of the river Segura

    Juan Vilanova y Piera va ser un dels naturalistes més destacats dins del panorama científic europeu de la segona meitat del segle XIX. Les seues aportacions van transcendir l’àmbit estrictament valencià, per a acabar assentant les bases de les disciplines de la geologia, la paleontologia i la prehistòria espanyoles a les acaballes del segle XIX. Amb motiu del recent bicentenari del seu naixement, es fa una breu revisió del seu pas per les comarques del migjorn d’Alacant, tot partint de les referències trobades en les seues publicacions i, també en part, de la premsa de l’època. Els seus treballs denoten un profund coneixement, no sols de les comarques del nord d’Alacant, València i Castelló, sinó també de les terres del Vinalopó i, fins i tot, del Baix Segura.
