El convent de l’Orde de la Mercé a Elx: de l’esperit de croada a lloc d’enterrament

    The convent of Santa Llúcia stands in the centre of Elche as one of the witnesses of the medieval city that we still inhabit today, despite the transformations of the centuries. Furthermore, the building, like so many others in our country –not only in Elche– shows the permanence of the stones, of the constructions, regardless of the groups and ideas that created them. The merce-darians arrived in Elche when the medieval city was being built, they inhabited the public baths that had been built by the defeated, they helped to give a new character to the territory and, in time, they became a reference point in the life of the city, taking part in the events and decisions of the community. But all this came to an end in the summer of 1835, when the friars were excluded from the monastery as a result of disentailment. We are left with the building occupied until a few years ago by the Clarissan nuns, a lot of buried remains to be discovered and a series of scattered and fragmentary documentary data for the knowledge of the history of a community that is still largely unknown and to which the following lines aim to make a general approach

    El convent de Santa Llúcia s’erigeix al centre d’Elx com un dels testimonis de l’urbs medieval que encara hui habitem, malgrat les transformacions dels segles. A més, l’edifici, com tants altres al nostre país –no només a Elx– mostra la permanència de les pedres, de les construccions, més enllà dels col·lectius i de les idees que les van crear. Els pares mercedaris van arribar a Elx quan la ciutat medieval s’estava fent, van habitar d’antuvi els banys públics que havien fet els ara vençuts, van ajudar a donar una nova empremta al territori i, amb el temps, van ser un dels referents de la vida ciutadana, formant part dels esdeveniments i de les decisions del col·lectiu veïnal. Però tot això es va acabar l’estiu de 1835, quan es va produir l’exclaustració dels frares arran de les disposicions desamortitzadores. Ens queda l’edifici ocupat fins fa uns pocs anys per les monges clarisses, un munt de restes soterrades encara per descobrir i una sèrie de dades documentals disperses i fragmentàries per al coneixement de la història d’una comunitat encara en gran part desconeguda i a la qual les següents línies pretenen fer una aproximació general.
