    La orden militar de Santa María del España es una fundación novedosa que hizo el rey Alfonso X el Sabio principalmente por dos motivos: por ser la primera orden militar marítima, pues hasta ahora todas eran terrestres, y por llamarse de España siendo una fundación de un rey castellano. En la ponencia presento el origen de esta orden militar, su organización, sus misiones y su decadencia y ocaso hasta su desaparición. También se alude a una institución que en este siglo XXI ha retomado el título y la organización de la orden pero convirtiéndola en una organización religiosa cultural.

    The military order of Santa María del España is an original foundation created by King Alfonso X the Wise mainly for two reasons: for being the first naval military order, because until now all were terrestrial, and for being called of Spain being a foundation of a Castilian king. In the paper I present the origin of this military order, its organization, its missions and its decline and decline until its disappearance. It also alludes to an institution that in this twenty-first century has taken up the title and organization of the order but turning it into a cultural religious organization.
