Resumen de Beyond Carpanta: Humour in the Plays of Josep Escobar

Rhiannon McGlade

  • Although best known for his cartoons, Josep Escobar's true hobby was thetheatre. Far from a departure from his daily life as a cartoonist, Escobarobserved that this engagement with the theatre was part of a strong connec-period of incarceration in the Model Prison (on account of pro-Republicantion between the two spheres. In his early career and later influenced by acontributions to the satirical press), Escobar's seemingly playful comicswere often marked by an embittered and critical tone towards the power structure of the time. This chapter considers to what extent - if at all - asimilar brand of humour as social commentary and covert critique can bedetected in Escobar's theatrical work. The analysis draws on psychologicaland linguistic approaches to humour, specifically in order to identify anddiscuss the implications of Escobar's use of humour in his works for thestage-Assaig general [Dress Rehearsal), A dos quarts de set, rapte! [Kidnap,at 6.30!), and L'altra cara de la lluna [The Other Face of the Moon] -, whichto date have received very little academic attention.
