«Casar huérfanas pobres», la fundación del capitán Alonso del Campo Lantadilla en la iglesia de San Esteban de Burgos (siglos XVII-XIX)

    El capitán Alonso del Campo Lantadilla, burgalés de nacimiento y chileno de adopción, nunca olvidó su tierra natal, Burgos. Fue consciente de las dificultades que tenían las mujeres huérfanas más necesitadas para poder contraer matrimonio y formar una familia por la imposibilidad de ofrecer una dote. Una situación que se daba por igual en los territorios americanos como peninsulares, pero quiso realizar una fundación para casar huérfanas en la iglesia donde fue bautizado en 1552, y donde estaban sepultados sus padres y ascendientes. A través de la documentación custodiada en el Archivo Municipal de la ciudad de Burgos y la conservada acerca de esta fundación en la Iglesia de San Esteban, en el Archivo Diocesano, hemos podido reconstruir el engranaje de la misma. Durante algo más de dos siglos benefició a 267 mujeres con una dote que pudo cambiar el rumbo de sus vidas.

    Captain Alonso del Campo Lantadilla, born in Burgos, but Chilean by adoption, never forgot his homeland, Burgos. He was aware of the difficulties that most in need orphaned women had in getting married and starting a family due to the impossibility of offering a dowry. That situation occurred equally in American and peninsular territories, but he wanted to make a foundation to marry orphans in the church where he was baptized in 1552, and where his parents and ancestors were buried. Through the documentation kept in the Municipal Archives of the city of Burgos, and the documentation of this foundation kept in the Church of San Esteban, in the Diocesan Archives, we have been able to reconstruct the gears of the foundation. For a little more than two centuries, it benefited 267 women with a dowry that could change the course of their lives.
