Il romanzo di Cervantes fu destinato dallo stesso autore al «desocupado lector»: espressione che non ha trovato, nella nostra lingua una traduzione semanticamente esaustiva. Sciascia, infatti, ricorda le due rese da Carlesi e Bodini, gli autori delle versioni ancora oggi fra le più accreditate, sottolineando che il ricorso a lunghe perifrasi fa perdere la pregnanza dell’aggettivo usato dallo scrittore spagnolo. Lo scrittore di Racalmuto riguardo alla tra-duzione di «desocupado lector» dell’autore spagnolo propone la frase: «ozieggiante lettore», perché a certo ozio, nell’accezione latina, si era voluto riferire certamente Cervantes.

Cervantes’ novel was addressed by the author himself to the “desocupado lector”: it is really an expression that has not found a semantically exhaustive translation in Italian. Sciascia usually referred to the translations made by Carlesi and Bodini, who were the authors of the versions that, today, are still recognized as the most accredited translations t, underli-ning as the use of long periphrases made one lose the significance of the adjective used by the Spanish writer. As for as the translation of “desocupado lector” is concerned, Sciascia suggested the phrase: «ozieggiante lettore» (idle reader), because Cervantes certainly meant for a peculiar idleness, in the Latin sense.
