  La crítica de Jovellanos a ciertas manifestaciones de la piedad popular se inscribe en el marco general de las propuestas ilustradas. Su principal argumento se sustenta en la superstición a menudo detectada en ellas. Pero el pensamiento de Jovellanos en esta materia presenta un matiz específico: son condenables las prácticas religiosas artificiosas y rituales, aquellas en las que un excesivo barroquismo ha dejado su huella. Por el contrario, muy influido por las costumbres ancestrales de Asturias, es defensor de las prácticas festivas de pueblos sencillos, marcadas por la ingenuidad y una relación natural con Dios. Esta tolerancia entronca directamente con su manera personal de vivir la religión a lo largo de su vida, siempre alumbrada por criterios racionales.

  Se trata de un cristianismo sincero y autoexigente, pero a la vez crítico con la praxis de una Iglesia que obstaculizaba el progreso de la economía y el dinamismo social, elementos que se perseguían para el prestigio del Estado.

  Jovellanos’s criticism of certain manifestations of popular piety falls within the general framework of Enlightenment proposals. His main argument is based on the superstition often detected in them. But Jovellanos’s thought on this matter has a specific nuance: artificial religious practices and rituals are reprehensible, those in which an excessive baroque style has left its mark. In contrast, highly influenced by the ancestral customs of Asturias, he is a defender of the festive practices of simple people, marked by ingenuity and a natural relationship with God.

  This tolerance is directly connected with his personal way of living religion throughout his life, always illuminated by rational criteria. It is a sincere and self-demanding Christianity, but at the same time critical of the praxis of a Church that hindered the progress of the economy and social dynamism, elements that were persecuted on behalf of the prestige of the State.
