Because FOR belongs to different syntactic categories (preposition, coordination, complementizer) and because it is polysemic (as a preposition, it has a large range of meanings, the coordinator expresses causality, and the complementizer has a virtualizing function), this term is particularly interesting to study concerning the question of the identity of a term (what makes it possible for the term to be the «same» in its various uses). This study aims at exploring the notion of identity of a linguistic term, using the notion of schematic form defined within the frame of the Théorie des Opérations Prédicatives et Énonciatives (TOPE). Through the analysis of FOR as a complementizer (§1), as a preposition with variable interpretations (§2) and as a coordinator (§3), our aim is to define the main outline of a schematic form in order to illustrate this theoretical concept.
