    El presente arti?culo distingue y desarrolla dos aproximaciones al hebreo bi?blico en la Alemania de la Ilustracio?n tardi?a (Spa?taufkla?rung), que corresponden a dos teori?as este?ticas divergentes. Presentando la lengua hebrea como un instrumento espiritual cuyo me?rito reside en la dificultad de descifrarlo, Johann Georg Hamann define la interpretacio?n como un proceso en el cual la imaginacio?n, inspiracio?n y creatividad sobrepasan la bu?squeda de hechos objetivos concernientes al texto tratado. El trabajo muestra co?mo la influyente aproximacio?n de Johann Gottfried Herder a la interpretacio?n fue modulada de cara a la hermene?utica de Hamann. Manteniendo la apreciacio?n de este u?ltimo sobre la implicacio?n individual en la lectura de un texto, Herder sostiene que las verdades objetivas concernientes al Antiguo Testamento –y, en paralelo, relativas a cualquier texto– deberi?an, sin embargo, ser perseguidas y alcanzadas por medio de la relacio?n afectiva y empa?tica del lector con los autores. La investigacio?n demuestra, de este modo, que estas aproximaciones divergentes al hebreo bi?blico resultaron emblema?ticas para las posiciones de la filosofi?a alemana de finales del siglo XVIII.

    This paper discerns two approaches to Biblical Hebrew in late-eighteenth-century Germany, which correspond with two diverging aesthetic theories. Presenting Hebrew as a spiritual artifact whose merits lie in the difficulty to decipher it, Johann Georg Hamann defines interpretation as a process in which the imagination, inspiration and creativity surpass the search for objective facts concerning the target text. The article traces how Johann Gottfried Herder’s influential approach to interpretation was modulated vis- a?-vis Hamann’s hermeneutics. Maintaining Hamman’s appreciation of individual engagement when reading a text, Herder nonetheless holds that objective truths concerning the Old Testament –and, in parallel, concerning any texts– should be sought and reached through the reader’s affective and empathic relationship to the authors. The article thus demonstrates that diverging approaches to Biblical Hebrew became emblematic of philosophical positions in the late European Enlightenment.
