From "Exemplo XLV" and "Exemplo XI" of the Conde Lucanor (CL), I construct Don Juan Manuel’s representation of the ethics of the occult. Basing their arguments on Exemplo XI, the “deán de Santiago,” previous scholars have contended for a coherent teaching on the occult in the CL. As a departure from this scholarship, I argue that Manuel’s teaching around the occult are variable and ambivalent, thereby reflecting the intrinsic ambiguity of the occult throughout the Middle Ages
