    As cover for defending troops attacking uphill Athenaeus Mechanicus recommends, among other things, the use of a special wedge-shaped tortoise which he calls ἀρετή. Following an idea of A. Rehm, this paper suggests on both stylistic and technical grounds to read ἀρτή instead of the transmitted ἀρετή. A comparison with other devices of the same kind is also proposed.

    Per difendere le truppe impegnate ad attaccare posizioni su alture Ateneo Meccanico raccomanda, tra le altre cose, l’utilizzo di una speciale testuggine ‘a cuneo’, definita ἀρετή. Riprendendo un’idea di A. Rehm, il presente articolo suggerisce, sulla base di considerazioni stilistiche e tecniche, di leggere ἀρτή al posto del trasmesso ἀρετή. Si propone inoltre il confronto con altre machine del medesimo tipo.
