In the second half of the 18th century, the Cathedral Chapter of the Canary Islands was aninstitution where a considerable number of committed intellectuals met, in part, with the Catholicenlightened ideals. In this historical stage, most of the appointed patrons will come from the mosteconomically dynamic rural nuclei, which had an evident effect on the institution, replacing part of themembers from the oligarchies by offshoots of medium-sized agrarian and urban owners. The changeallowed, among other things, to transfer part of the currents of European secular thought to an entitycharacterized by its doctrinal orthodoxy. The prebendary Miguel Mariano de Toledo was an example of an outstanding scion of a medium-sizedfamily of urban and peripheral property owners —he was born in Santa Cruz de la Palma—, rising to asuccession of relevant positions where he tried to apply a pragmatic, enlightened and weighted vision onthe matters dealt with within the cathedral chapter and in the decisions adopted in the executiveadministrativepositions held in the diocese.
