A cobertura midiática dos dias nacional e internacional dos ciganos em Portugal e no Brasil: reflexões sobre a (in)visibilidade social

    The different ethnic groups known as Roma/Gypsies have historically been discriminated against in different countries of the world. Commemorative dates, such as national and international days, are, in addition to celebrations, also opportunities to inform the population about various social issues and contribute to the fight against prejudice towards different minority groups. The media coverage of these events can contribute to increasing the social visibility of these groups, especially if carried out in such a way as to include the voices of these individuals. In view of these considerations, this study aimed to analyse how the coverage of the national and international Roma days was shaped in Brazilian and Portuguese newspapers in different years, without delimitation of temporal space. For that, 56 journalistic pieces were analysed, through the Descending Hierarchical Classification (DHC), with the help of the Iramuteq software and through the Theme/Category-based Content Analysis, through the identification of thematic (sub)categories that organize the content of the material. In addition, certain variables of interest were analysed, such as date of publication of the news articles, social actors heard as sources, use of images, among others. The results made it possible to identify thematic clusters that underline the historical process of discrimination suffered by the Roma people, as well as the existence of different strategies already implemented or still to be built to guarantee the integration of these groups. Although the Roma were invited to speak on the pieces we analysed, the representatives of government-related bodies were the most heard social actors. The study highlighted the invisibility that such observances related to the Roma still have in both countries, especially in Brazil. The frequencyand the way in which these dates are reported in the journalistic media are constantly changing and can help defend the rights of different minority groups, contributing to the construction of more inclusive societies

    Os diferentes grupos étnicos conhecidos como ciganos têm sido historicamente discriminados em diferentes países do mundo. Datas comemorativas, como os dias nacionais e internacionais, são, além de celebrações, também oportunidades para informar a população sobre questões sociais diversas e contribuir para o combate ao preconceito em relação a diferentes grupos minoritários. A cobertura midiática destas efemérides pode contribuir para aumentar a visibilidade social destes grupos, sobretudo se realizada de forma a incluir as vozes destes indivíduos. Tendo em vista essas considerações, este estudo objetivou analisar como se configurou a cobertura sobre os dias nacional e internacional dos ciganos em jornais brasileiros e portugueses em diferentes anos, sem delimitação de espaço temporal. Para tanto, foram analisadas 56 peças jornalísticas, a partir da Classificação Hierárquica Descendente (CHD), com o auxílio do software Iramuteq e a partir da Análise de Conteúdo Temático-Categorial, por meio da identificação de (sub)categorias temáticas que organizam o conteúdo do material. Além disso, foram analisadas algumas variáveis de interesse, como data de publicação das matérias, atores sociais ouvidos como fontes, uso de imagens, dentre outras. Os resultados permitiram identificar conjuntos temáticos que sublinham o processo histórico de discriminação sofrido pelos ciganos, bem como a existência de diferentes estratégias já implementadas ou ainda por se construir para garantir a integração destes grupos. Ainda que os ciganos tenham sido convidados a falar nas matérias analisadas, os atores sociais mais ouvidos foram os representantes de órgãos relacionados ao governo. O estudo evidenciou a invisibilidade que tais marcos relativos aos ciganos ainda possuem em ambos os países, sobretudo no Brasil. A frequência e a forma como essas datas são noticiadas na mídia jornalística estão em constante transformação e podem auxiliar na defesa dos direitos de diferentes grupos minoritários, contribuindo para a construção de sociedades mais inclusivas.
