El compartimento de retablo que aquí presentamos es una aportación novedosa al catálogo del pintor Jorge Inglés (activo hacia 1445-1485), una de las figuras clave del tardogótico castellano. Conservada durante años en diferentes colecciones de la ciudad de Bilbao, su aparición en el mercado supone la incorporación de una obra más al exiguo catálogo de obras del maestro, integrado por muy pocos conjuntos. Uno de ellos es el retablo de la iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Villasandino (Burgos), donde se conservan diferentes compartimentos de temática mariana salidos de su mano integrados en un retablo de cronología barroca. Con todo, algunas de las tablas que debieron formar parte del mueble gótico original no se reaprovecharon en esta nueva estructura, lo que favoreció su posterior comercialización y dispersión, de ahí que hoy se conserven en manos privadas. Es el caso de la tabla que nos ocupa, que había permanecido inédita hasta la presente y que, sin ningún género de dudas, puede asociarse al resto de compartimentos conservados en Villasandino, tanto por su estilo como por sus medidas o el tratamiento decorativo.

The altarpiece compartment that we present here is an new contribution to the catalog of the painter Jorge Inglés (active around 1445-1485), one of the key figures of Castilian late Gothic painting. Conserved for years in different collections in the city of Bilbao, its appearance on the market represents the addition of one more work to the meager catalog of works by the master, made up of very few sets. One of them is the altarpiece of the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Villasandino (Burgos), where different Marian-themed compartments created by his hand are preserved, integrated into an altarpiece of Baroque chronology. However, some of the panels that should have been part of the original Gothic retable were not integrated into this new structure, which favored their subsequent commercialization and dispersion, which is why today they are kept in private hands. This is the case of the panel in question, that had remained unpublished until now and which, without any doubt, can be associated with the rest of the compartments preserved in Villasandino, due to its style, measurements or decorative treatment.
