El artículo documenta los antecedentes y la creación del Departamento Forestal del Ecuador, primera instancia estatal preocupada por la protección de los bos-ques y el control ambiental. El estudio analiza la influencia del primer director de esta agencia estatal: Misael Acosta Solís, geobotánico ambateño y reputado es-tudioso en temas forestales y conservacionistas en Ecuador. El ensayo explora, además, los conceptos de conservacionismo que fueron asumidos por el Estado y otras instituciones ecuatorianas, así como las tensiones entre el discurso y la práctica ambientalista.

The article documents the antecedents and the creation of the Forestry Depart-ment of Ecuador; the fírst State agency dedicated to forest protection and envi-ronmental control. The study analyses the influence of the fírst director of this institution: Misael Acosta Solís, a geo-botanist born in Ambato and reputed re-searcher in forestry and conversation issues for Ecuador. The research explores the concepts of conservationism that were assumed by the State and other Ecua-dorían institutions, as well as the tensions between envíronmental discourse and practice.
